Windows2000 Networking Changes

There are several changes to the way networking configurations are made. This document is to help point out some of these.

Changing Network Settings

If you want to change the IP or Network Adapter settings, you need to get to the Network and Dial-Up Connections screen.

1. You can access this from any one of the following locations:

  • Click on Start / Settings / Network and Dial-Up Connections
  • Control Panel / Network Connections
  • Right-click on My Network Places / Properties
2.. Right Click on the Local Area Connection
3. Select Properties
4. Double click on the component you want to change
5. You can have an icon on the taskbar to show when you are connected to the network and as well as show when there is network traffic.
6. Double-click on an item you want to change. For example, changing the TCP/IP settings will bring up the following box:
7. To change DNS, WINS and a few other settings, click on the Advanced button. The following is the WINS screen:

Adding Map Drive and Disconnect Icons to the Explorer Toolbar

1. Open up the Explorer
2. Right click on the toolbar
3. Select Customize.
4. Select Map Drive / Add and Disconnect / Add

Making Network Connections

1. You can make a network connection from a single dialog box

If you already added the Map Drive icon to the toolbar, click on it. If not, select Tools / Map Network Drive

4. When you are in the Folder box, clicking on the down arrow will show previous connections.

NOTE: A new feature of Windows 2000 is the ability to map to a network drive to a directory below a share.
For example if  \\SERVER\SHARE1 is what is shared, and there is a directory below that share point called USERS,
you could map directly to that directory by entering \\SERVER\SHARE1\USERS.


Network Adapter Information and Settings

1. You can get to the screen by either:

  • Right clicking on the My Computer icon and select Properties
  • Clicking on the Control Panel / System icon
2. Click on the Hardware tab
3. Click on the Device Manager button
4. Open up the Network Adapters section
5. Double click on your network adapter

Joining a NT4 Domain

1. You can get to the screen by either:

  • Right clicking on the My Computer icon and select Properties
  • Clicking on the Control Panel / System icon
2. Click on the Network Identification tab
3. Click on the Properties button to join a Windows NT secure domain
4. Enter the name of the Domain you want to join
5. You will be prompted to enter a user’s name and password with privileges to create machine accounts in that domain.

6. Note: If the machine account already exists in the domain, any domain user can join their workstation to the that domain.
This function will be completely automated during the installation, as it is with NT4.
